The Junior Varsity Panthers took on a top ranked team in Grapevine/Colleyville on Sunday and squeaked out an OT win thanks in part to heroics by one Max Honeybone. East struck early and owned the first period with two goals by Maldonado and one by Wallery, with two helpers provided by Honeybone and one from Hatley. Grapevine scored a goal at the end of the period to make it 3-1 PESH. The Panthers outshot Grapevine 7 to 4 in the first frame.
The 2nd period was another matter as Grapevine put the puck on net 9 times and found the back of the net twice, while the Panthers had only 5 shots and no goals. 3-3 tie at the end of the middle frame.
Things tightened up for both teams in the 3rd period with the scorekeeper registering no shots for either team, sending the game into sudden death overtime. In just over a minute into the extra frame, Honeybone scored his first goal of the game and third point to give the JV Panthers an overtime win, and Grapevine/Colleyville their second consecutive OT loss. Final 4-3 PESH.
Following the win, Plano East finds itself in 6th place in the JV Gold division, but only 3 points behind the 2nd place team, cross-town rival Plano West. The Panthers (8 points) will play 4th place Highland Park (10 points) next Sunday, November 5, 4:00p at DPSC Richardson.
