The Varsity and Junior Varsity Panthers made clean sweeps at the annual preseason Leveling Festival tournament this past weekend. The tournament is played in order to help "level" the competition by placing teams in the appropriate skilled divisions for the upcoming regular season.
The Varsity Panthers were 1 of 10 teams registered in the Varsity Silver division. They won games against Keller (5-2) on Saturday and Plano Senior (8-2) and Mansfield (5-4) on Sunday. Jack Eaton (9 points, 4 goals, 5 assists) and Joseph Erickson (7 points, all assists) led the scoring. Netminders Jack Dockery (2 wins, 32 saves on 38 shots) and Richie Sloane (1 win, 19 saves on 21 shots) got the wins.
The JV Panthers were 1 of 16 teams registered in the single JV division. PESH won games against Flower Mound/Marcus (6-2) and Birdville (9-2) on Saturday, and Denton County (3-1) on Sunday. Micha Maldanado (12 points, 7 goals, 5 assists) and Max Honeybone (6 points, 5 goals, 1 assist) led scoring for the weekend. Kaleb Perez (2 wins) stopped 27 of 30 shots, and brother Ryan Perez (1 win) stopped 13 of 15 shots for the wins.
The Varsity Panthers are expected to play in the Varsity Silver division when the regular season kicks off on Thursday, September 28. There is a possibility that the 16 team JV division will be split into 2 divisions. In any case, the Junior Varsity Panthers will start their season on Sunday, September 24.
The league is planning on releasing the schedules by next week, so stay tuned for Panther Hockey!
